Potassium argon dating advantages

C) dating usually want to know about the radiometric[1] dating methods that are claimed to give millions and billions of years—carbon dating can only give thousands of years.

People wonder how millions of years could be squeezed into the biblical account of history. Christians, by definition, take the statements of Jesus Christ seriously.

Even when the absolute dates are available, we have to supplement the information with relative dating.

The various methods of relative dating are; This method depends on the common observation that the height of the habitational area increases as the people continue to live at the same place.

Obviously, this works only for things which were once living.

Curtis, a professor emeritus of earth and planetary science at the University of California, Berkeley, whose pioneering use of radioactive isotopes to date relatively young rocks provided the first solid timeline for human evolution, died Dec. Curtis collaborated with late UC Berkeley professors John Reynolds, a physicist, and Jack Evernden, a seismologist, to take advantage of the radioactive decay of potassium into argon in volcanic rock to determine how long ago the rock formed.

Using this potassium-argon method, they established precise dates for recent geologic time periods that allowed Curtis to assign dates to fossilized human remains and prove they were much older than once thought. Since the late 19th century, radioactive isotopes such as uranium and potassium have been used to date billion-year-old rocks, but dating young rocks was a challenge because the radioactive decay products in such rocks are present in minuscule quantities.

Ages can be measured with an analytical uncertainty of 1 to 2% for rocks as young as 100 Ka or older than 3000 Ma.

Rubidium, because of its geochemical association with potassium, is also found in a wide range of rocks and minerals.

Because of its lower relative abundance, its longer half-life and the universal presence of common Sr (the radiogenic isotope), the Rb-Sr method does not usually produce a very precise age when applied to young rocks (e.g., Mesozoic or Cenozoic).

But coach Bill Belichick loves to thumb his nose at the NFL establishment (remember when he picked up Tim Tebow), so adding Manziel to tweak the rest of the league would be right up the Hoodie's alley.… continue reading »
